When you enter Monhegan’s wildlands, you soon realize you are not in a park or a public garden. Few signs direct you and no fences keep you safe. The experience of walking along the trails is – as far as possible – natural. This may mean that trails are narrow and rough underfoot. It also means that what you see is virtually unaltered by humans. Monhegan Associates is dedicated to preserving the wildlands with as little interference as feasible. Our ethic is Leave No Trace. We thus ask visitors to respect others’ right to enjoy this landscape in its natural state. We actively discourage the making of structures along the trails or on the shore. Rather than trying to create a fantasy experience, please help us preserve the unique natural state of the island’s wildlands by leaving them undisturbed; appreciate and share the wonder of this special place as it is.
