NATURAL ECOSYSTEM PRESERVATION

Over the past several decades, non-native invasive plants have become established throughout several areas of the Monhegan wildlands. Non-native invasive plant species are considered by some to be a growing threat to the biodiversity of conservation lands throughout the state of Maine. While it is the general policy of the Monhegan Associates to limit human intervention with the natural processes that occur in the wildlands whenever possible, action has been taken in recent years to contain the spread of non-native invasive plants in certain areas.
The Monhegan Associates is currently working with iMap invasives to document the locations of non-native invasive plant species on the island.  This information is used to prioritize areas of plants to be managed.
Information about our current mapping efforts can be seen HERE.
