ABOUT OUR LANDS

Nearly all of the Wildlands of Monhegan Island, approximately 400 acres, are privately owned and managed by the Monhegan Associates Inc. The Monhegan Associates are dedicated to sustaining the unique natural beauty and ecology of these Wildlands while keeping them accessible to visitors.

WHAT ARE WILDLANDS?

Wildlands are tracts of any size and current condition, permanently protected from development, in which management is explicitly intended to allow natural processes to prevail with “free will” and minimal human interference.*

*Definition from Wildlands in New England.

NATIONAL NATURAL LANDMARK

In 1966 Monhegan Island was designated as a National Natural Landmark.  The National Natural Landmarks Program recognizes and encourages the conservation of sites that contain outstanding biological and geological resources.  Sites are designated by the Secretary of the Interior for their condition, illustrative character, rarity, diversity, and value to science and education.  The National Park Service administers the program and works cooperatively with landowners, managers and partners to promote conservation and appreciation of our nation’s natural heritage

GOVERNING POLICIES

Over the past several years the Monhegan Associates Board of Trustees has developed a list of governing documents that encompass the policy of land governance. These documents have evolved over years of discussion and decisions by various groups of trustees who are responsible for stewardship of the land and reflect the current position of the land ownership.  Read more about our Land Use and Stewardship Policies HERE.

MAPS

Recent efforts by the Monhegan Associates have included a full surveying of all our land holdings, particularly with the boundaries with the Monhegan Plantation and with other privately owned land. These survey maps can be accessed for public viewing HERE.
